Bal Gangadhar Tilak was an Indian social reformer and freedom activist. He was one of the prime architects of modern India and probably the strongest advocates of Swaraj or Self Rule for India. His famous declaration “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it” served as an inspiration for future revolutionaries during India’s struggle for freedom. The British Government termed him as the "Father of Indian Unrest" and his followers bequeathed upon him the title of ‘Lokmanya’ meaning he who is revered by the people. Tilak was a brilliant politician as well as a profound scholar who believed that independence is the foremost necessity for the well being of a nation.
Childhood & Early Life
Keshav Gangadhar Tilak was born on July 22, 1856 in a middle class Chitpavan Brahmin family in Ratnagiri, a small coastal town in south-western Maharashtra. His father, Gangadhar Shastri was a noted Sanskrit scholar and school teacher at Ratnagiri. His mother's name was Paravti Bai Gangadhar. Following his father's transfer, the family shifted to Poona (now Pune). In 1871 Tilak was married to Tapibai who was later rechristened as Satyabhamabai.

Tilak was a brilliant student. As a child, he was truthful and straightforward in nature. He had an intolerant attitude towards injustice and had independent opinions from an early age. After graduating from Deccan College, Pune, in 1877 in Sanskrit and Mathematics, Tilak studied L.L.B. at the Government Law College, Bombay (now Mumbai). He received his law degree in 1879. After finishing his education, he started teaching English and Mathematics at a private school in Poona. Following a disagreement with the school authorities he quit and helped found a school in 1880 that laid emphasis on nationalism. Though, he was among India's first generation of youths to receive a modern, college education, Tilak strongly criticized the educational system followed by the British in India. He protested against the unequal treatment of the Indian students compared to their British peers and its total disregard for India’s cultural heritage. According to him, the education was not at all adequate for Indians who remained woefully ignorant about their own origins. He started the Deccan Educational Society with college batchmates, Vishnu Shastry Chiplunkar and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar for the purpose of inspiring nationalist education among Indian students. Parallel to his teaching activities, Tilak founded two newspapers ‘Kesari’ in Marathi and ‘Mahratta’ in English.
Political career
Indian National Congress
Gangadhar Tilak joined the Indian National Congress in 1890. He soon started vocalizing his strong opposition to the moderate views of the party on self-rule. He maintained that simple constitutional agitation in itself was futile against the British. This subsequently made him stand against the prominent Congress leader, Gopal Krishna Gokhale. He wanted an armed revolt to broom-away the British. Following the partition of Bengal by Lord Curzon, Tilak wholeheartedly supported the Swadeshi (Indigenous) movement and Boycott of British goods. But his methods also raised bitter controversies within the Indian National Congress (INC) and the movement itself.
Due to this fundamental difference in outlook, Tilak and his supporters came to be known as the extremist wing of Indian National Congress Party. Tilak’s endeavours were supported by fellow nationalists Bipin Chandra Pal of Bengal and Lala Lajpat Rai of Punjab. The trio came to be popularly referred to as the Lal-Bal-Pal. In the 1907 national session of the Indian National Congress, a massive trouble broke out between the moderate and extremist sections of the Indian National Congress Party. As a result of which, the Congress split into two factions.
Imprisonment
During 1896, an epidemic of bubonic plague broke out in Pune and the adjacent regions and the British employed extremely rigorous measures to contain it. Under directives from Commissioner W. C. Rand, the police and the army invaded private residences, violated personal sanctity of individuals, burned personal possessions and prevented individuals to move in and out of the city. Tilak protested against the oppressive nature of the British efforts and wrote provocative articles on it in his newspapers.
His article inspired the Chapekar brothers and they carried out assassination of Commissioner Rand and Lt. Ayerst on June 22, 1897. As a result of this, Tilak was imprisoned for 18 months on Sedition charges for inciting murder.
During 1908-1914, Bal Gangadhar Tilak spent had to undergo six years of rigorous imprisonment in Mandalay Jail, Burma. He openly supported the revolutionaries Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki’s efforts to assassinate Chief Presidency Magistrate Douglas Kingsford in 1908. He continued to write during his years of imprisonment and the most prominent of which is Gita Rahasya.
Following his growing fame and popularity, the British government also tried to stop the publication of his newspapers. His wife died in Pune while he was languishing in Mandalay prison.
Tilak and All India Home Rule League
Tilak returned to India in 1915 when the political situation was fast changing under the shadow of the World War I. There was unprecedented celebration after Tilak was released. He then returned to politics with a mellowed down outlook. Deciding to re-unite with his fellow nationalists, Tilak founded the All India Home Rule League in 1916 with Joseph Baptista, Annie Besant and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. By April 1916, the league had 1400 members that increased to 32,000 by 1917.
He rejoined the Indian National Congress but could not bring about reconciliation between the two opposite-minded factions.

Newspapers
Towards his nationalistic goals, Bal Gangadhar Tilak published two newspapers -'Mahratta' (English) and 'Kesari' (Marathi). Both the newspapers stressed on making the Indians aware of the glorious past and encouraged the masses to be self reliant. In other words, the newspaper actively propagated the cause of national freedom.
In 1896, when the entire nation was gripped by the famine and plague, the British government declared that there was no cause for anxiety. The government also rejected the need to start a 'Famine Relief Fund'. The attitude of the government was severely criticized by both the newspapers. Tilak fearlessly published reports about the havoc caused by famine and plague and the government's utter irresponsibility and indifference.
Social Reforms
After completing his education, Tilak spurned the lucrative offers of government service and decided to devote himself to the larger cause of national awakening. He was a great reformer and throughout his life he advocated the cause of women education and women empowerment. Tilak educated all of his daughters and did not marry them till they were over 16. Tilak proposed Grand celebrations on ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ and ‘Shivaji Jayanti'. He envisioned these celebrations inciting a sense of unity and inspiring nationalist sentiment among Indians. It is a sheer tragedy that for his allegiance towards extremism, Tilak and his contribution were not given the recognition, he actually deserved.
Death
Tilak was so disappointed by the brutal incident of Jalianwala Bagh massacre that his health started declining. Despite his illness, Tilak issued a call to the Indians not to stop the movement no matter what happened. He was raring to lead the movement but his health did not permit. Tilak suffered from diabetes and had become very weak by this time. In mid-July 1920, his condition worsened and on August 1, he passed away.
Even as this sad news was spreading, a veritable ocean of people surged to his house. Over 2 lakh people gathered at his residence in Bombay to have the last glimpse of their beloved leader.
Legacy
Although Tilak nurtured strong Nationalist sentiments, he was a social conservative. He was a devout Hindu and spent a lot of his time writing religious and philosophical pieces based on Hindu Scriptures. He was one of the most popular influencers of his time, a great orator and strong leader who inspired millions to his cause. Today, Ganesh Chaturthi, started by Tilak, is considered as the prime festival in Maharastra and adjacent states. Tilak has featured in a number of biographies for being an iconic figure of Indian Freedom struggle. The Marathi newspaper started by Tilak is still in circulation although now it is a daily instead of a weekly during Tilak’s time.

Dhirubhai Ambani a Legendary Contributor

June 03, 2018 0

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani(Dhirubhai Ambani ) was born on 28 December 1932, at Chorwad, Junagadh (now the state of Gujarat, India) to Hirachand Gordhanbhai Ambani and Jamnaben in a Modh family of very moderate means. He was the second son of a school teacher.

The Founder of Reliance Industries in Mumbai with his cousin.

Dhirubhai took Reliance Industries public in 1977 and by 2002 the combined fortune of the family was $6 billion.

Ever since childhood, Dhirubhai was more keen on work than studies and repeatedly bunked classes and roamed in streets, watching people work and making money.

He’d once said his mother to stop lamenting about the hardships and that he would make 'heaps of money one day.' His entrepreneurial career began in his early school years by selling 'bhajias' to pilgrims in Mount Girnar over the weekends. On completion of his school studies, his brother Ramnikbhai sent him to Aden, Yemen, which was the second busiest oil banking and trading port of the time.

Dhirubhai Ambani joined the largest transcontinental trading firm named A.Besse & Co as a gas-station attendant, as well as a dispatch clerk. A.Besse & Co would deal in every possible branch of trading from cargo booking, shipping, handling, forwarding, to wholesale merchandising for a great number of American, European, African and Asian companies. His hard work promoted him to maintain and manage company`s oil filling station at the port of Aden.

Dhirubhai once said, 'More than anything else I learnt that nothing big can ever be achieved without money, influence and power and I also learnt that money, influence and power alone cannot achieve anything in life, big or small, without a certain soft, delicate, sensitive, understanding human touch in all one’s deeds and words.' In 1958, he came back to India with Rs 50,000 and started the business of polyester yarn import-export at Masjid Bunder of South Mumbai and later founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation with an investment of 15,000. Back in those days Polyester was in great demand across Asian markets and soon his profit skyrocketed.

Dhirubhai continued to live in one bedroom flat with his wife and children for almost a decade until 1968 when he moved to Altamount Road in South Mumbai. In 1966, Dhirubhai started his own textiles manufacturing unit at at Naroda, in Ahmedabad.

He launched his first brand ‘Vimal’ sometime in 1969-70; and in 1975, his manufacturing was visited by a team of technical experts from the World Bank who certified it as 'excellent even by developed country standards.'

The biggest breakthrough in his life came in the year 1977, when he managed to attract over 58,000 investors in the very first IPO of Reliance Commercial Corporation; and he never looked back ever since. A humble beginning helped him to stand his empire worth $64 billion.

Dhirubhai built up a textile and Petrochemicals Empire with his dedication, ability to recognize new business opportunities, dare to take risk, never-give-up attitude and intelligence to handle people.

Dhirubhai Ambani Quotes:
Our dreams have to be bigger, our ambitions higher, our commitment deeper, and our efforts greater. This is my dream for Reliance and for India.

Think big, think fast, think ahead. Ideas are no one’s monopoly.

Pursue your goals even in the face of difficulties, and convert adversities into opportunities.

Give the youth a proper environment. Motivate them. Extend them the support they need. Each one of them has infinite source of energy. They will deliver.

Jack Ma - Inspirational to many young dynamic and ambitious.

June 01, 2018 0

Jack Ma born on 10-Sep-1964, his real name is Ma Yun and known professionally Jack Ma.

Jack Ma is Inspirational to many young dynamic and ambitious. and Self-Made Billionaire and CEO of Alibaba.

He is a Chinese business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He is the co-founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, a multinational technology conglomerate. As of March 2018,

He is one of China's richest men with a net worth of US$42.4 billion, as well as one of the wealthiest people in the world.

Jack Ma is seen as a global ambassador for Chinese business and as such is frequently listed as one of the world's most powerful people by Forbes.

In 2017, he was ranked 2nd in the annual "World's 50 Greatest Leaders" list by Fortune.

This little boy grew up to be none other than Jack Ma, Founder of Alibaba. In March 2016, this leading Chinese e-commerce company boasted of a net income of US$42.4 billion.

While Jack Ma’s incredible story of earning $12 a month to becoming a multi-billionaire is a definitive rags to riches tale, he attributes his sparkling success to relentless effort over a turn of luck.

“Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine,” he has often said.

Today, the almost stubborn persistence of a young man who refused to bend down to fate has finally paid off.

To nobody’s real surprise, Jack Ma was recently announced the richest person in the whole of China, and one of the top billionaires of Asia as well.

For Jack Ma, this success today has come at the price of his youth in a way, where he stepped one foot into quicksand more times than he can count today.

However, this also taught him to keep one foot on the ground and pull his way back onto safe land and watch his step in the future.

Like many legends before him, Jack Ma refused to be told no. And like his fictional idol, Forest Gump, he ran like hell towards his own finish line no matter the challenges thrown at him. From a very young age, Jack Ma realised his failures and weaknesses, and learned to keep working on them until one day, they became his prize-points.

Coming of age “I flunked my exam for university two times before I was accepted by what was considered my city's worst university, Hangzhou Teachers University. I was studying to be a high school English teacher.

In my university, I was elected student chairman and later became chairman of the city's Students Federation.”  Coming last in class can have a serious impact on any child’s self-esteem, making them feel completely worthless.

Despite running a leading tech company, Jack Ma was, and still is, terrible at math. He failed in multiple subjects in school and even failed the university exam twice before being accepted into an obscure college.

Fortunately for him, he possessed an insight that reassured him that topping a class doesn’t equate to being intelligent or driven. Names like Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, and Rabindranath Tagore reaffirmed his belief that intellectual prowess is not limited to the four walls of a classroom.

He never stopped believing that his excellence lay elsewhere. Later, Jack Ma even applied to Harvard University 10 different times and faced rejection all 10 times.

This goes to show that more than securing a seat, his goal was to keep taking up a seemingly impossible challenge and try to work it out in different ways.

Pre-Alibaba “I got my story, my dream, from America. The hero I had is Forrest Gump...I like that guy. I've been watching that movie about 10 times. Every time I get frustrated, I watch the movie. I watched the movie before I came here again to New York.

I watched the movie again telling me that no matter whatever changed, you are you.”  Like any other student post-graduation, Jack Ma was faced with the challenge of out-competing his batch mates and fresher’s across the country to secure a good job with a sufficient salary.

A degree in English from a less than reputable college certainly didn’t work in his favour, and although he applied to 30 different jobs for safe-keeping, he was rejected from all. In an interview with Bloomberg, he even confessed that out of 24 candidates, he was the only one who was turned away from a position at KFC.

On applying for a post in the police, he was told that he was “no good”.  That is more number of rejections than anyone should have to count at one given go, and if it were you and me, it would have possibly led to a breakdown of some kind.

But for Jack Ma, the challenge had become a part and parcel of life.

He managed to procure a small gig as a teacher in English and International Trade from the university he graduated from.

While his pockets were practically empty, his heart was full of hope for the next step in his career. Even though at that point, he didn’t have a semblance of a clue to what it would be.

Post-Alibaba “In the beginning I just wanted to survive. For the first three years, we made zero revenue. I remember many times when I was trying to pay up, the restaurant owner would say, ‘Your bill was paid.’ And there would be a note saying, ‘Mr. Ma, I'm your customer on the Alibaba platform. I made a lot of money, and I know you don't, so I paid the bill.’”

When Jack Ma set up Alibaba in 1999, it wasn’t an immediate success.

The Chinese economy had not yet developed to support the e-commerce industry, which was believed to be a threat to traditional shop businesses.

At every step of the way, Jack Ma had to fight off resistance – from shopkeepers convinced that he was trying to put them out of business to government authorities who were suspicious of the privacy-factor that this online business model would affect.

Coupled with this was the fact that Jack Ma’s vision for the company entailed limited promotions for his existing partners, who were told that they could not rise beyond the ranks of managers.

He did this so that a group of new hires would be attracted enough to occupy the open high managerial positions.

This proved to be a fatal miscalculation on Ma’s part, since it led to the segmentation of the company into many unproductive layers and led some of his best people to walk out and take their resources with them.

However, he went on to rectify this mistake and concentrate on making his existing team a stronger, more unified unit. In the meanwhile, his efforts began to be recognised overseas. Soon enough, the company received its first round of funding from foreign investors – a step in the direction of making it the unchallenged force it is in the e-commerce world today.

As Jack Ma often puts it, “Never give up & the most important thing you should have is patience.” without patience, you can never reach even a fraction of your true potential- which someday, could even change the world.

Jack Ma – Quotes.

Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine.

I like to play cards. I'm not very good, because I don't want to calculate, I just play by instinct. But I've learned a lot of business philosophy by playing poker.

I want to stress the importance of being fair to our readers. You should not impose your own view and prejudice on the readers and try to lead them to a conclusion. As a reader, I understand what a fair report is.

The more I come to know about the outside world's perception of China, the more I feel there are all sorts of misunderstandings, and to a certain extent, people do not get the full picture from the media. A lot of foreigners have few opportunities to visit China, and a lot of Chinese people do not have the chance to go to Europe or to the West.

I think young generation is always better than last generation. No matter you like it or don't like it. My father said, 'Jack, I'm so good, you'll never be' - but I'm better than him. My father is better than my grandfather. My children will be better than us.

Every time there's an election, people start to criticize China.

I call Alibaba '1,001 mistakes.' We expanded too fast, and then in the dot-com bubble, we had to have layoffs. By 2002, we had only enough cash to survive for 18 months. We had a lot of free members using our site, and we didn't know how we'd make money. So we developed a product for China exporters to meet U.S. buyers online. This model saved us.

I tell the government, if people have no jobs, you are in trouble. Government will be in trouble. My job is to help more people have jobs.
